Magalie BONDU and Felix FLEISCHHAUER
Ven (Sweden)
6th to 13th of June 2015
From the 6th to the 13th of June the Biophotonics’15 Summer School took place on the island of Ven in Sweden. Around 60 participants mainly PhD students (medical doctors, researchers and engineers) were invited to be educated in nine different topics all related to biophotonics and bioimaging. Each lecturer had a total of three and a half hours to present his or her research interest. Most lecturers started with giving an introduction, followed by discussing technical challenges, advantages and disadvantages. A more detailed list of the lecturers can be found below. Closest related to our projects were the talks given by Lihong Wang from Washington University in St. Louis on photoacoustic and Wolfgang Drexler from the medical University of Vienna on optical coherence tomography.
Eric Swanson was invited as a special speaker to give us an introduction on entrepreneurship and set up an internal team challenge. The goal was to build an elevator pitch of seven minutes in order to convince potential investors, played by lecturers, to invest in our projects. We worked in teams of 5 to 8 persons to raise a project based on an innovative idea linked with our field.
During the Summer School all participants were asked to present their projects with a poster. Magalie presented her poster with the title “Higher energy supercontinuum source for photoacoustic imaging” and, Felix was presenting his poster “Spectroscopic optical coherence tomography in combination with a supercontinuum source”. The presented posters are attached.
Both of us used the opportunity to interact and discuss our projects with the lecturers and other participants during the week. We obtained helpful input.
